Summer Music (FAQ)


University of Maryland College Park School of Music


FAME, in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Music, is presenting the Summer Music Program consisting of three summer workshops: Music Technology, Vocal Music, and FAME Jazz Band Intensive. The program is designed to prepare rising 7th through 12th grade students for successful futures by fostering the development of proficiency in computer technology, increased proficiency in music, including voice and critical thinking skills. The small class size (16 students per session) allows students ample one on one time to address individual needs and caters to students’ interests and specializations. The training transcends beyond occupations, helping students gain skills for advanced placement in schools and employment, as well as inspiring them to achieve.

Each workshop culminates with a showcase of the students’ creative projects each Friday, and they receive a certificate of completion. Family members and sponsors are invited to attend the showcase.

Music Technology Participants will:

  • Explore cutting edge recording standard software such as Logic, Digital Performer, Reason, Noteflight and Garage Band
  • Receive a one-year subscription to MusicFirst Software
  • Experiment with music composition
  • Learn about music production
  • Produce finished MP3 files to share digitally and publish online
  • Learn about and prepare for education and career opportunities in music
  • Meet and Collaborate with new music friends
  • Enjoy Master Classes with recording artists, engineers and producers
  • Be introduced to the business of music
  • Learn proper use of social media and other online tools
  • Experience the University of Maryland campus

Vocal Music Participants will:

  • Learn many vocal techniques
  • Strengthen and build vocal capacity
  • Perform sight-reading/sight-singing exercises
  • Learn to be intentional in their interpretation of lyrics and musical phrasing
  • Improve their execution of performance repertoire in the areas of classical
  • arias/Italian art songs, jazz standards, pop, and theatre
  • Collaborate with program participants in creating/recording their own compositions or arrangements and perform them for a live audience
  • Learn proper use of social media and other online tools
  • Experience the University of Maryland campus

FAME Jazz Band Intensive is designed for members of the FAME Jazz Band Program.  They will

  • Solidify fundamentals of instrument technique: tone production, articulation, intonation, rhythm, and sight-reading skills
  • Be exposed to a variety of jazz styles
  • Learn the basics of jazz improvisation which requires the development of confidence on the instrument, as well as a deeper knowledge of how chord progressions work.
  • Through interactions with visiting instructors and artists, students will gain insight into the workings of a professional music career, including discussion of college programs, practice techniques, audition tips.
  • Experience the University of Maryland campus


  • Increased self-confidence and interpersonal collaborative skills
  • Increased functional knowledge of musical form and theory
  • Acquisition and mastery of new technical skills via hands-on experience with a diverse suite of software and hardware; or musical genres
  • Increased enthusiasm for music as a music student, music consumer, hobbyist, or even career paths in music production

FACULTY: Instructors are highly respected and recognized music technology experts, music educators, and professional musicians.

FEES: Long-standing partnerships and support from the University of Maryland College Park School of Music, Prince George’s County MD Government, United Parcel Service (UPS), Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission (MNCPPC), and Pepco, an Exelon Company allow us to offer these unique workshops for youth at a substantial reduction. The fees include a nonrefundable registration fee of $50:

The following are some frequently asked questions regarding the Summer Music Program. If you cannot find the answer to your question or would like to speak with someone in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is the application closing date? The applications closing date is May 2, 2020, or when the workshops are sold out. Due to limited seating, we recommend early registration.

How do I apply/enroll in the Summer Music Program? Complete the online application at A complete application includes an application form and payment.

What are the workshop hours? All workshops are held Monday through Friday, from 9 AM – 4 PM.

What does my child need to bring to camp? An identification card and a healthy attitude for learning!

What is FAME’s refund policy? Please see “Refund Policy” below.

How will my registration be confirmed? You will receive an automatic confirmation email when you complete the registration form.

Is there an orientation session? Yes, Orientation will take place on Monday, the first day of each workshop. Parents & Guardians are encouraged to attend.



Refund Policy: A written statement requesting cancellation of the student’s registration is required and should be sent to Melissa Morales at Cancellation requests due to illness or accident require a physician’s written verification. Upon receipt of the verification, a refund will be issued, less a $75 administrative fee and the registration fee. In all other instances: Cancellations received up to one month prior to the program start date will receive a 50% refund. Cancellations received less than one month prior to the program start date are not eligible for refunds.

Reporting Illnesses & Absences: FAME should be notified ASAP by phone 301-805-5358 or email,, if your child is ill or will be absent.

Disciplinary Matters: All participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior while attending the program. The following guidelines are designed to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Participants shall:

1. Show respect to all participants and staff and respect for program rules and equipment.

2. Take direction from program staff.

3. Refrain from bullying and using abusive or foul language.

4. Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants, or program staff.

5. Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, and facilities.

FAME reserves the right to dismiss any child, at any time, due to circumstances that indicate the child’s needs may no longer be met or the child is not a good fit for the program. This will occur without a refund (or portion thereof) or credit towards a future program.

Attire: All participants should dress appropriately for the weather and a classroom setting.

Attendance: Participants are expected to attend all classes. If you are unable to attend class, we request that you notify us prior to class. Participants are required to arrive to sessions on time each day. Sessions end promptly at 4 pm. Parents and/or designee are responsible for ensuring that students are picked up on-time daily.

Cell Phones: Cell phones should not be used in classrooms; however, they may be used during breaks.
